FAQ

Will the treatment hurt?
The pressure can vary from gentle to firm and there may be some discomfort on distended pressure points as energy is released. The discomfort is usually a pleasant pressure associated with release.

How long does a session last?
One hour. Treatments can be doubled to two hours on request, a double rate is levied in this instance.

How often will I need to come back?
Once a fortnight is usually recommended for body health maintenance, although if there are specific health issues, once a week may be a suitable frequency.

Why do you work through clothes and cotton material?
In Shiatsu a good deal of pressure is often required, cotton cloths allow greater precision and accuracy on small areas. Using oil, as some massage therapies do, prevents the Shiatsu therapist from making precise movements as there is too much “slip”. Having a Shiatsu massage fully clothed keeps the client’s body warm and comfortable.

Can you see a pressure point?
No, pressure points are energetic gathering points on the body, the Shiatsu therapist can feel them as raised or indented areas, or feel them as hot or cold zones, but they cannot be seen by the naked eye.

What is Qi?
It’s pronounced “chee” and it’s the Chinese word for the energy which runs throughout the body like an electrical current. Qi is the energy of the body and of the meridians.

Will I notice a difference in my health / pain / body?
There should be a marked difference in many areas of your body including better elimination of waste products, reduction in muscle and neural pain, an increased level of energy, and an enhanced sense of well-being.

Why is it important to drink water after a Shiatsu session?
It’s important to drink water before and after a session as it creates a medium for waste products to leave the body after treatment; Shiatsu works deeply on detoxifying many areas of your body’s systems. Increased water consumption benefits all the organs and systems and promotes a good basis for overall health.

Is Shiatsu just a physical treatment or is energetic healing involved?
Shiatsu works on many levels including energetic ones. Chakras are balanced during a treatment and Qi is evenly distributed around the body. Working on a principle that the mind and body are one, emotional issues are addressed and natural energetic healing is performed. I work with my guides to facilitate deeper healing and recovery.

Will it help my sore neck or back?
Absolutely, muscles are warmed and tension is released. In addition, compensating muscles, or muscles “holding the pain”, are relieved of pressure.

Will my medical aid pay for Shiatsu?
Not as yet.
